A patent is a legal document that protects inventions and gives the patent holder exclusive rights to an invention for a limited time. A U.S. patent gives the patent holder the right to “exclude others from making, using, offering for sale, or selling” their invention in the U.S.
There are three different types of patents: utility, design, and plant patents, each having a different term length. Once granted, design patents have a term of 15 years. Utility and plant patents have a term of 20 years starting from the filing date.
